Cooperative department is one of the vital departments under the Government of Karnataka which oversees the administration and democratic functioning of the Cooperative institutions in the state along with providing financial assistance and guidance to them.
A cooperative is defined as an association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic social and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise.At present in Karnataka,there are cooperative institutions under various sectors such as agricultural and non agricultural credit, dairy , fisheries, industries , horticulture, agriculture processing, consumer, marketing , livestock , urban banking alongside some special areas like textiles, sericulture, jute and coir , women and multipurpose societies. All these institutions come under the purview of Karnataka Cooperative Societies Act ,1959 which comes under the Cooperation Department.
The Registrar of Cooperative Societies plays a pivotal role in fostering the development and regulation of Cooperative Societies across the state in turn contributing to the socio-economic development at the grass root level.
